A Poem About Covid-19 by Mrs Devi

‘In the time of Covid we felt trepid’

Pandemic, pedagogy and screens combine

Hangouts daily waiting to see who would arrive

Whanau and children together give learning a try.

I remember the days when I thought that working from home would simply be great.

No need for the car, or dress up,

I could work in my pj’s and never once worry about the boss,

I’d only dress up when I’d be meeting on ‘meet’.

Staring at the screen I grab a seat

waiting for my students to click on google meet

More time to get things right

We greet each other and begin our sharing time,

Not face to face, nowadays we do it online.

The connection grew more and more important,

not only the Wifi but seeing the teacher’s next installment.

Who would have thought - a teaching day with no students,

We don't just relax, but start each day with prudence.

With concerns about how to do the job well

Just refresh your browser and teach your kids how to spell.

Despite the time and effort, we put in for our students to succeed,

A glass of merlot or a full stout ale after a long day’s work - was guaranteed.
